Why "Resume" doesnt bring you back to the same status you were before?

I simply do not understand. You play for a while, gain some cash, the other loose and then you decide to stop playing for a few minutes and then resume the game later.
To my surprise, when you do that, all the other player now have the same amount of money as you! What happened? What is the point?
I would really enjoy the game more if I could simply pick up from where I stopped.
